Favorite Song of the Day “Wide Eyes” by the Local Natives March 22, 2010

There are somethings that you can not escape. A face floating in your subconcious, a burning desire that rages unrelentingly, and a guilt that has you tied to your morality’s stake. And music. This song has been following me all day, to the point that I’ve become obsessed with the percussion pattern (my kryptonite) and the harmonies. Oh the harmonies. If there is one thing that the emgerging band can do well, is a mean blending of voices. Musically, Wide Eyes is is like a hazy dream that you don’t want to wake out of. It’s sensual, which is always a delightful danger to me.

For people who: Love percussion, like sweet tea and the hot sun, read before going to bed.
Perfect for: Raindancing, the moment before attraction is palpable and magnetic, a red booth in some godforsaken diner, flower-picking.

Favorite Song of the Day March 21, 2010

When I heard the first 25 seconds of this song, I was thinking are your serious? During finals week, I stumbled upon i have no kid sister while studying in the library and I almost bursted out laughing. Then I quickly got over that. You see, Oh no Oh my is one of those rare, fascinating indie bands that has mastered the art of creating intriguing musical nonsense. Listening to i have no kid sister is like supporting a hammered friend as he spews forth the kind of magic that makes him more a … sidewalk poet rather than a man who had too many a Jack Daniels. Lines like you look like Audrey Hepburn/when you get all dressed up/I have seen all your movies/’cause Audrey’s a stone fox make you realize how silly this song is, but it dawns on you that that is ALL it is. The music is what really, really grabbed me because it goes in so many pleasant directions. It’s not a precocious “aye me, the world is a sickening cradle rocking me to sleep” kind of song (although we are a big fan of thosei). I have no kid sister begs you to just lighten up and not take yourself seriously. Fun? Consider my invitation RSVPed.

For people who: Love handclapping, need to be off guard, enjoy acoustic/sampler/tamborine/keyboard infused bliss, are multi-instrumentalists, are slightly intoxicated but can still (somewhat) dance.

Perfect for: Bike riding on a dusty path, lounging on a lime green couch, underground dance parties, eating Captain Crunch.

Favorite Song of the Day “1979″ Smashing Pumpkins February 9, 2010

Filed under: My Fav Song of the Day — owlintree @ 3:50 am

Some groups are so epic that they do not dare need introduction (especially by the likes of me). Such a band like the Smashing Pumpkins deserves more accolade than a twenty-something college wannabe know-it-all can muster. Alas, I humbly accept this. Most kids concieved from 1992 on at a house party probably have a playlist with at least a TSP song or two to thank, as the band was probably musically present for the good, the bad, and of course, the ugly in many a young one’s life. “1979″ is a song that any avid fans of the band and/or 90′s Alt Rock movement will surely know and with reason. The song is layered with intense nostalgia for a boldness known only to the coming of age. With Corgan’s unique vocal ability and gripping transparency, you find yourself aching for a past buried deep, an ignorance you wish hadn’t ever been enlightened. And the music has me swooning immediately. TSP, as always, perfection.

For people who: Miss the 90′s and all its glory, like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, enjoy thoughtful lyrics.
Perfect for: Hot summer nights on the sidewalk, coffee with friends, curled up for a night in, a study session playlist.

Favorite Song of the Day Cyne “Steady” February 8, 2010

Filed under: My Fav Song of the Day — owlintree @ 2:44 am

Like with every living being on Earth, there many truths that make up the building blocks of the total person. For example
-I rock an awesome fro
-I’d rather read a good book than an issue of Cosmo
-I talk a lot
-I love underground hip hop

As much as I can tolerate and even enjoy mainstream to a certain extent (a girl HAS to get her groove on, ya dig?), the underground scene has a strong place in my heart. Aesop Rock, MURS, Blue Scholars…if you dig hard enough you can truly strike gold in this musical arena. Cyne should not be exempt. Comprised of rappers Akin and Cise Star and backed by producers Enoch and Speck, Cyne is not going to ask you to do the stanky leg or how much ice they can manage to put on their bodies without falling over. With probing lyrics and a groovin’ beat, the song Steady makes concious rap sound not only enlightening but also totally head boppin’.

For people who: want to listen to music that can inspire them and help them to delve deeper into social and personal issues, love sick beats, are activists.

Perfect for: Rallies or political events, chilling at home, a slow-tempo song for a party

My favorite Song of the Day An Echo In by The Sea and the Cake February 2, 2010

Filed under: My Fav Song of the Day — owlintree @ 2:45 am

Ok, it’s a Monday so I wouldn’t be the only one to say that I’ve had a very long day. Here’s a quick run through *wake up *work at coffee shop for a couple of hours *study for an hour and a half *doctor’s appointment * work at the coffee shop for a longer period of time…somewhere in the strained itinerary was a bathroom break where I was crying for divine intervention or nap.
Both would have been nice.
Anywho, inching towards the finishline of a long day, I still had to put up my favorite song–An Echo In by The Sea and the Cake. Simply because it can do things where other devices fail, namely to help ease my Monday distress. As soon as I put on my headphones and in sink back in my library chair, I’m almost instantly relaxed. It’s super chill and smooth although the drums keep a pretty lively tempo. My only gripe is that it’s a tad bit challenging to decipher the lyrics. But despite that the ending…superb. But you would have to listen to the whole song to know that, wouldn’t you?

Perfect for people who: Need to chill out, need a cool, need a sweet indie song for a party playlist, have a bad case of the Mondays.

My Favorite Song of the Day 01/31/10 Pinback “Anti-Hu” January 31, 2010

I got into Pinback last year on Pandora, because as always, I ask for diamonds and it gives me diamonds and pearls. The song that laid the foundation of love was “Good to Sea” and if you haven’t heard that one my friend, you definitely should. Anti-Hu is wonderous because although the lyrics are sparse, Pinback has shown time and time again talent of intuitively balancing between lyrical and instrumental expression. The music will have you bobbing your head in a dreamy haze.

For People who: Appreciate instrumentals just as much as vocals, are avid daydreams, need to study but want to listen to something Bach-less, need to chill out.
